Mapping Projects

Rural City of Wangaratta

Partnering with RCOW, ACHE completed a project mapping culture significant sites along the roadsides of the new development areas of Wangaratta. ACHE has provided RCOW with recommendations on how to respect the integrity of these significant sites, in accordance with Victorian Legislation.

Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability group

Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability (WLS) obtained a Victorian Landcare Grant to identify and record local culturally significant sites and their associated stories in several important green spaces in the city of Wangaratta. WLS contracted Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Education (ACHE) to undertake the project and Northern Beaches, Kaluna Island, Little Kaluna and Mullinmur billabong were selected as the key sites for assessment.

Another important part of the project was to develop appropriate land management practices in consultation with the Rural City of Wangaratta (RCOW), who are the land manager of these sites, to ensure their conservation.

Goulburn Broken CMA

Partnering with the Warby Ranges Landcare group and Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, ACHE has completed a cultural mapping project. The objective of the project was to identify two sites of cultural significance within the project area being the western side of the Warby Ranges, using the data collected to educate landholders and create a greater understanding of cultural awareness. Alongside landholders who serve as members within the Warby Ranges Landcare Group, we identified three sites with significant cultural value.

North East CMA

ACHE has undertaken a cultural mapping project with the project area being the eastern side of the Warby Ranges. Funded through the Bush for Birds project, North East Catchment Management Authority federal funding grants. The projects overall objective was to support Bangerang peoples’ ability to identify, manage and protect culturally significant sites on country. Additionally, this project was able to build the capacity of Bangerang people to contribute to land management activities on country.

Below are just a few photos of culturally significant trees recorded as part of the above projects.
