Cultural Burning
ACHE and 14 members of the Bangerang have recently undertaken accreditation in ‘planning and conducting simple prescribed burns’. The Bangerang have been participating in burning for three fire seasons. We are excited to be rebirthing the traditional fire knowledge that our people have utilized for thousands of years while caring for country.
•Burning has been used for thousands of years by Traditional Owners as part of a complex land management system to sustain healthy Country.
•Cultural burning is always led by Traditional Owners who decide when, where, how and why to burn.
•Cultural burns have multiple objectives that are closely tied to the health of Country and the health of people.
•Cultural burns are never done for fuel reduction alone as this can lead to outcomes that are harmful to Country.
•There are many barriers to cultural burning being undertaken at scale and Government can play an important role in supporting Traditional Owners to address these challenges.
